Most Impressive Examples of Silhouette Photography

In photography, silhouettes usually have a powerful meaning and impact. They emphasize the shape of the subject and create a dramatic look. At the same time it offers a gentle and fascinating look, a mysterious approach.

A good definition of a silhouette is that it represents an outline of the subject which appears dark, against a lighter background. This photographic technique is not very easy, but once you get the hang of it, not very hard either. You only have to pick the right moment of the day, the perfect light and create the outstanding contrast. Let's see these amazing pictures!

7 Perfection in Landscape Photography

Today we proudly present a surprising post. It’s a special edition, with a truly professional photographer’s artwork.

The following landscapes speak more than a whole dictionary of words, they are rich in composition, light and color, life and every possible technique used in photography to achieve perfection.

A Journey into the Insect Macro World

We will stare into those…many many eyes of tiny spiders, we will observe a moth’s trunk and we’ll go “eeew” at the hairy bodies of other insects. All in all, it is fascinating to observe these little beings, and we’re grateful to Craig for his help with this: he combines the passion for photographic art with the scientific part (being an engineer for a living), achieving spectacular results: macros, as well as some light painting shots.

8 Photographs and Lighting Setups for Every Occassion

It would be very pretentious of me to declare that looking at the photographs and diagrams below will teach you how to light. That said, looking at the photographs and setups and trying to understand the motivation behind the lighting will give you a good start when dealing with similar lighting dilemmas.

You can always come back to this post to see how a particular image was lit to make a similar setup or to use it as a stepping stone for your own. Then enjoy the photos below.

High Speed Photography Primer

On the previous post we build all the circuitry needed for complete control over high speed setups and today we will put it to the test. We will recreate one of the images previously done on DIYP (and has been in the title for this series).

My local Flickr group is a lively and active group (the Hull Pool) and lots of collaboration goes on. The most collaborative image is "Whoosh," which is the outcome of (to quote Moose) "another evening of technical mucking about with friends" Moose Malloy and mkratty - who were also part of the crossbow games :-) we explained along with the sound trigger.

The setup and image we are about to describe was actually featured on DIYP way back, and I thought it would be interesting to show how we made a similar image using our HSP setup. Just see these photographs below.

7 Pictures of New York

New York City, city of dreams, city of hope. The city that never sleeps.
Frank Sinatra’s words say it all… “If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere”

Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known all over the world. The Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, to mention a few, and New York City’s five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Manhattan’s skyline is universally recognized.

A city, famous for it’s skyscrapers and nightlife, but sadly enough also known for the destruction of the World Trade Center…

7 Pioctures of The Power of Green-Yellow Photography

Green is the color of life, fertility and nature. The sight of the green grass is the most restful view. Green symbolizes self-respect and well being, it means personal balance and harmony.

Pure, bright and sunny yellow is the easiest color to see. People who are blind to other colors can usually see yellow. Yellow means joy and happiness. Yellow daffodils are a symbol of unrequited love.

Today’s showcase on PXL combines these two colors into photographic art, to bring harmony and joy for the viewer, to bring him to a life of creativity and inspiration.

7 Photos of Japan

Due to the tragic past events from Japan and its surroundings, we decided to show solidarity to people’s pain in the best way knows by us: art. We hope that not only we will make people think about the beauties of nature and life that surround us every day, but also be more kind to others and enhance, inter-human relationships.

Nature sometimes strikes and devastates enough, there is no need that we, humans, destroy more through wars and intolerance.

The following photography showcase emphasized the differences from what can be a dreamy life one day and a nightmare the next one. Let us be responsible for our actions towards nature and humanity, let us reach out a helping hand to the ones that could have been us…

7 Professional Executed Low Angle Photographs

Low angle photography can be achieved by positioning the camera on a vertical axis below the eye-line, in such a manner that you need to look up to take the shot. The main important feature of low angle shots is the dramatism added to the image: most of the time the subject appears to be separated from the background and increases in size, as an optical illusion.

Today’s showcase presents 50 inspiring low angle photos that will definitely impress and create a whole new perception of space and shapes.

If you want to lean more about low angle photography, here you can find some piece of advice for a starter.

7 Photos to Trigger your Fantasy

Castles had their origins in the 9th and 10th centuries. Most of them were built as a private fortified residence of a lord or noble.

Some turned into ruins through the ages, others remained in perfect state, or got renovated, and were turned into musea, some are still in use by royalty or other nobility.

Castles can also have a fairy tale image. In story books, beautiful princesses live there, sometimes even cruel queens or ghosts.

But even real castles can trigger our fantasy… A perfect example of this is one of the most beautiful castles in the world, the Bavarian castle Neuschwanstein. It was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. What’s interesting about Neuschwanstein is that Hans Christian Andersen wrote some of his fairy tales in the castle, and later on, Walt Disney used that castle as inspiration for Disneyworld’s castle…

In the following 50 photos, we’ll give you a taste of some of the most beautiful castles in the world. Enjoy!

Rainforest Fauna and Flora Photography

Tropical rainforests are found in the equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. More than half of the world’s species of plants and animals are found in the rainforests. We are slowly killing the rainforests, and all the life in them, by deforestation and due to the global warming…

We call them the “jewels of the Earth”, because they provide us with over one quarter of all natural medicines. Another name is “lungs of the Earth”, because they are also responsible for one fourth of the world’s oxygen turnover, processing it through photosynthesis.

Light Paintings and Sculptures

Although light is considered to be rather a practical than an artistic tool, it has some properties which designers can effectively explore in their works. Indeed, light can also be considered as a medium for more powerful and more vivid artistic expression. In fact, many artists and crews make use of it creating quite impressive works of art.

In this episode of our Monday Inspiration series we present beautiful examples of light art — paintings, sculptures, drawings and graffitts which were created using light. At the bottom of this post you will find references to related Flickr pools which contain thousands of further examples of what can be achieved out of creative experiments with light. Just enjoy these photos below.

The structure is a cube punctured by over 5000 long thin windows that project from all its surfaces and lift it off the ground. As the long thin windows all point at the exact centre of the cube, it only takes a single light source, located at this central point, to send light through every tube, causing the windows to glow orange. A small number of them also project into the cube to form seating. Designed by Heatherwick studio.

7 Pictures of Antwerp

Antwerp is one of the major cities in Flanders, Belgium. It is located on the right bank of the river Scheldt, which mouths into the North Sea. The city has one of the largest seaports in Europe.

According to folklore, and as celebrated by the statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend about a mythical giant called Antigoon.

He exacted a toll from those crossing the river Scheldt, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river Scheldt.

Eventually, the giant was beaten by a young hero named Brabo, who cut off the giant’s own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, that can be translated as “throwing a hand”.

It used to be the town of Rubens, a great painter, and nowadays, Antwerp is known as the city of diamonds, or the city of fashion… Below you can find 50 amazing photos, showing you the beauty of Antwerp.

7 Most Eccentric Creatures of Nature

The most eccentric places on Earth are the ones untouched by human hand, nor altered by pollution. The most eccentric animals are not seen on a regular basis and if some are, it’s difficult to capture them in unique and impressive poses.

This blog post focuses on “amazing”: rare animals, detailed close-ups, unexpected poses, unusual dimensions and colors. Some shots are funny, some are cute and some are simply jaw dropping or scary.

7 Shots from the Swinging Sixties

An era that takes us back to the Beatles, the first man on the moon, peace movements, President Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Che Guevara, Woodstock, and Mary Quant’s mini skirt…

The decade was also called the Swinging Sixties because of the fall of some social taboos especially relating to sexism and racism.

And of course: The Hippies. Older generations used to look down on them, now, new generations look up to them. The hippie movement had a strong influence on clothing styles, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints.

Hippies are also related to festivals, long hair, free love and drugs, and of course peace.

Originally, a landmark literally meant a geographic feature used by explorers and others to find their way back or through an area.

Now, a landmark includes anything that is easily recognizable, such as a monument or a building, or any other spot to designate places that might be of interest to tourists.

A few examples are the Statue of Liberty, Uluru, the Taj Mahal, Mount Everest, and the Eiffel Tower.

When we see one of those, everyone knows in which part of the world they are located.

Here are 50 landmarks for you to recognize. Are you ready for a trip around the world? Let's see the amazing pictures below!

Fantastic HDR Pictures

Applied carefully, High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR) can create incredibly beautiful pictures which blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion. In graphics HDR imaging is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows. This is usually achieved by modifying photos with image processing software for tone-mapping. And the results can be really incredible; in fact, many artists and designers come up with some pretty fancy results.

This post covers the extremely beautiful and perfectly executed HDR-pictures. Some of them might look surreal, too colorful, even magic or fake, but they are not — keep in mind that they’ve all been developed out of usual photos, and not a single image is an illustration. let we enjoy these photographs below.
