Man’s association with his canine friends seems to predate any formal record-keeping of domesticated animals. Dogs have provided men with much needed support for as far as we can remember. They have stayed with humans even in the earliest forms of human settlements and have faithfully accompanied their masters on long, tiring and adventurous journeys. Men have depended on these animals in their campaigns to hunt food for their families and guarantee them protection from enemies and wild animals.

Keeping in mind all these services that man’s best friend has offered for him, the strong human-canine bond in more recent times should not be surprising for us. We may not be in need of the kind of protection that dogs offered in earlier times, but we still seem to depend on them for comfort and companionship. Dogs remain among the most widely domesticated species on this planet. Also, trained dogs, with their sharp senses, continue to do for us what we could not have been able to do even with the most sophisticated machines. We see dogs on airports, in the calamity-hit areas, as well as performing duties in security and intelligence organizations. Quite an impressive record they have, we must confess.
