7 Pictures of Bruges

Bruges is a beautiful city in Flanders, Belgium, known for its canals and its lace. The historic center of Bruges is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One of its many medieval buildings, the Church of Our Lady, is one of the world’s highest brick towers. The sculpture Madonna and Child, which can be seen in the church, is believed to be Michelangelo’s only sculpture to have left Italy within his lifetime.

Some of the other amazing tourist attractions are the belfry, the swans at the Love Lake and the beguinage. A beguinage is a collection of small buildings used by Beguines. These were various lay sisterhoods of the Roman Catholic Church, founded in the 13th century in the Low Countries, comprising religious women who sought to serve God without retiring from the world.

Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, Bruges is sometimes referred to as “The Venice of the North”.
